Concept

Treat the room, keep the home

Fix the sound inside

Boom, flutter and echo come from the room, not the speakers. A few thick absorbers in the right places do more than a better pair of monitors.

Hang it yourself

Panels hang on a French cleat: two screws in the wall, lift on, lift off when you move. Corner traps need no screws at all, they simply stand in the corner. No builder, no studio build.

Drawn from Barcelona

Our hemp grid is inspired by the city's street plan: Cerdà's Eixample, where every block is a square with its corners cut. Each opening repeats that block, and so does our logo. In Catalan, a city block is an illa.

Why wood fibre and hemp

Most acoustic panels are foam or mineral wool. Foam is usually 3 to 5 cm thick and stops working where the bass begins. Mineral wool works, but it itches and has to be hidden behind something.

Wood fibre absorbs as a full 10 cm core, is pleasant to handle and breathes with the room. Hemp board gives it a hard, natural frame, pressed from a plant that grows in a single season.

Both come from natural building, a world we know well. Together they make a panel that does the acoustic work and still looks like it belongs in a home.

Wood fibre

A soft mat of wood fibres fills the frame. Sound enters the open fibres and fades out as a little heat.

  • 0,88absorption at 500 Hz, 0,50 at 250 Hz
  • 50 kg/m³light and open-pored
  • Breathesvapour-open, no glass wool, non-irritant

Mostly wood, with a small share of polyolefin fibres. Absorption calculated.

Hemp board

Pressed from hemp and flax stalks. The line on every edge is where two pressed sheets meet.

  • 90–150 daysfrom sowing to harvest
  • < 5%plant-based binder, no formaldehyde
  • 1.689 kgCO₂ stored per m³ of board

Front

Acoustic fabric

An open black weave over the Tela front and behind the Reixa grid. It hides the fibre and lets the sound through.

Corner trapsPanels

Traps stacked in the two corners behind the speakers, panels where the first reflections hit the side walls, a cloud above your head and two rows on the back wall. Empty rooms get extra panels until the reverb drops to about 0,4 s. A starting plan, not a measurement.

Absorbing is not soundproofing

Good to know

Panels make a room sound better, so you don't need to turn the volume up as much. They don't stop the neighbours hearing it.

This is true of every acoustic panel, ours included. Absorbers soak up sound inside the room: less echo, tighter bass, a clearer mix. But most of the sound that reaches the flat next door travels through the walls, floor, ceiling and gaps, and a panel on the wall barely changes that.

Keeping sound in takes building work:

Mass

Heavier walls and ceilings, for example extra layers of dense plasterboard. Weight is what blocks sound.

Decoupling

A room inside the room: new walls on resilient mounts, a floating floor, so vibration can't pass to the building.

Sealing

Sound leaks through any gap. Solid doors with seals, airtight windows, sealed sockets and vents.

Isolating the gear

Speakers, subwoofer and DJ table off the floor and walls, so the bass doesn't drive the structure.

Full soundproofing is a project we design and build in Barcelona, quoted room by room. Available after the launch. Join the first batch and tell us about your room.

About us

Barcelona

When architecture meets DJing

ILLA was founded by Mattia: DJ, architecture graduate, timber-house technical consultant and a self-confessed prophet of wood fibre. He knows how walls, wood and insulation behave, and how a DJ likes to hear music, at home or in the studio.

Eight years living in Poland brought him close to the makers of a new generation of natural building materials, and two of them became ILLA. One frames every panel: hemp board, a modern, engineered alternative to solid wood, pressed from the stalks of industrial hemp, the part of the crop usually left behind as waste. The other does the work inside: wood fibre, a soft, breathable core that soaks up sound.

After moving to Barcelona, he found inspiration in its streets: the grid of the Eixample and its blocks with cut corners, the illes. That shape became the pattern of the panels and gave ILLA Acoustics its name.

Every piece is assembled in Barcelona. Come and pick yours up.

Questions

How many do I need?

Try the planner above for a starting point. Then join the first batch with your room size and we'll plan it with you.

Do they work for hi-fi, home cinema or gaming?

Yes. Echo and boomy bass spoil any listening, not only DJ sets.

Tela or Reixa?

The only difference is the front. Behind it, both have the same 10 cm wood fibre core, so they handle bass and mids the same way.

Tela is all fabric: it absorbs the most, highs included. Use it where you want the room quieter and tighter.

Reixa puts the hemp grid over the fabric. The hard board bounces part of the highest frequencies back into the room, so it stays lively instead of sounding dead.

Mixing them works best: Tela on the side walls and ceiling, where the sound hits first, and Reixa on the back wall and in the corners.

How do I get them?

Free pickup in Barcelona. Elsewhere, shipping is charged at cost.

Do you install them?

Yes, on request. We can place and hang the panels for you, quoted together with your room plan.

Can I choose the fabric colour?

Black for the first batch. More colours if first-batch members ask for them.
